What are Baby Friendly Practices?

In a nutshell it means doing everything right to give every newborn its birthright to breastfeed and to breastfeed successfully.

World Health Organisation ( WHO ) initiated the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in 1990 and many countries have embraced this important move to reverse the damage done since breast milk substitutes were made available in the early 1900s.

What is so bad about feeding babies with infant formulae?

The single most important reason... it is dangerous food in the hands of caregivers who do not how to prepare it in a safe way, especially so in hands of mothers of the underdeveloped countries. In these countries the use of infant formulae is linked to poorer health outcomes because of the prevalence of unsanitary preparation conditions, including lack of clean water and lack of sanitizing equipment.

UNICEF estimates that a formula-fed child living in unhygienic conditions is between 6 and 25 times more likely to die of diarrhea and four times more likely to die of pneumonia than a breastfed child.

We are Baby Friendly!

Hospital Lam Wah Ee has always been supportive of breastfeeding but we realised that support is not good enough to have a positive impact. We decided to do more! We have to promote, protect and support breastfeeding. We embraced the WHO Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative in January 2014.

The achievement today is the culmination of 3 years of hard work by my committee and all related staff of the O&G department, Baby Care Room and Operation theatre. We could not have succeeded without the help and support of everyone in the hospital.

It was truly a collective effort!

This achievement is the beginning of a life long commitment! Hospital LWE will strive to maintain the standard of the BFHI practices to help mothers endow the best gift to their babies ie: breast milk.

Congratulations Hospital Lam Wah Ee!

Code of Ethics for the marketing of Infant Formulae:

Hospital Lam Wah Ee is fully compliant and adhere to Code of Ethics of the Milk industry.
We do not accept:

  1. Free infant formulae
  2. Sponsorship from Milk industry in cash or kind
  3. Advertisement material in whatever form

  4. We practise strategies for successful breastfeeding.

    • No bottle feeding
    • No artificial teats
    • No fluids other than breast milk

The 2 critical steps are “skin to skin” immediately after birth and “rooming in”. A baby friendly hospital must provide these facilities and I am proud to say that Hospital Lam Wah Ee has implemened these 2 important steps.

    • “ skin to skin” soon after birth helps early initiation of breastfeeding
    • Rooming in

Rooming-in allow mothers and infants to be together

    • Helps mother to learn feeding cues of baby and how to care for baby
Helps feeding in response to the cues (breastfeed on demand)
      - Allows mother to bond with baby
      - More likely to succeed in breastfeeding
      - Baby is more clm and cry less

We welcome all expectant mothers to take advantage of this amazing experience of childbirth and breastfeeding in our Baby Friendly environment.

The first few days after delivery is the most vulnerable stage as far as breastfeeding is concerned. Breastfeeding is not all easy and most time it needs to be learned. A positive mindset and commitment,by the mother, husband and family support are all important factors. First time mothers are bound to encounter difficulties. At this stage the mother who want to breastfeed her baby should be given all the support necessary to ensure successful breastfeeding.

Hospital Lam Wah Ee is committed to give you the support you need!
