Audiology

OVERVIEW

The audiology clinic provides hearing care for all patients, helping patients get their hearing conditions diagnosed, as well as providing education and any necessary intervention. To run hearing assessments, the audiologist collaborates with the Ear, Nose, & Throat (ENT) doctor and Health Screening Centre. Audiologists also work with paediatricians to conduct testing for the Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

Currently, many cases of hearing loss go undetected or untreated until the condition becomes progressive and affect many aspects of life. Get your hearing tested if you are experiencing any of these conditions:

  • When you find speech and surrounding sounds muffled
  • When you cannot hear high-pitched sounds clearly (e.g., birds, doorbell, telephone, alarm clock)
  • Difficulty following conversations in a noisy place
  • Difficulty understanding speech over the phone
  • Difficulty differentiating speech consonants (e.g., between /s/ and /f/ in speech)
  • Frequently requesting others to speak more slowly , clearly or to repeat a sentence in a louder tone
  • Increasing the volume of the television or radio to be louder than usual
  • Experience ringing in the ears
  • Hypersensitivity to certain sounds, which you find bothersome or painful

Even without any hearing loss symptoms, a person with a high risk of hearing loss should still get tested. People who work in settings with noise hazards are recommended to get their ear and hearing examined regularly.

Audiology

SERVICES

Hospital Lam Wah Ee offers screening and diagonostic audiological services, mainly to treat adult patients. The audiology clinic is equipped with the best technology and a certified audiologist who carries out:

  • Otoacoustic Emission Test (DPOAE)
  • Pure Tone Audiometry Test (PTA)
  • Impedance Test
  • Hearing aid retails and fitting

Prior to an audiological test, a visit to an ENT doctor is compulsory. The doctor will perform an ear examination and also treatment if there is any ear condition causing a temporary hearing loss before referring to you to the audiologist

HEARING AIDS

Hearing aids are a special device designed to aid people with hearing loss. This device works by amplifying surrounding sounds and speech. A hearing aid helps minimise the disability and restrictions due to hearing loss for a productive lifestyle. A patient with hearing loss should be fitted with a hearing aid as soon as possible to prevent any social or cognitive issues that may arise from the condition.

If your ear and hearing assessment indicates the need for a hearing aid, the audiologist will conduct a hearing aid trial session to select the appropriate type of hearing aid. Education, counselling and orientation will be provided to help the patient and their family familiarise themselves with the device.
